The 9th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge takes place from 4 to 9 July. Over the years it has become the key event showcasing alternative propulsion methods for carbon-free boating.
Since its inception in 2014, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge has brought together the yachting industry and a new generation of engineers to offer innovative solutions in the propulsion and alternative energy sector. The 2022 edition will welcome more than 35 teams, including 27 universities representing around 20 nationalities in the Principality. “The yachting industry will not be able to evolve if it doesn’t incorporate the concept of sustainable development into all of its initiatives,” says Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco. And it’s working: “To begin with, the boats were not really professional,” says Bertrand Piccard, founder of Solar Impulse Foundation and one of the event’s sponsors. “These pioneers were just starting to attempt something with alternative energies. Now, it’s become saleable! The event has a unique format that combines several contests at sea (trials, speed records, etc.) with a technical component on land. It also hosts numerous talks, a panel discussion on the future of hydrogen and daily tech talks. Since 2019 it has organised a Job Forum for young people to find internships or job opportunities with yachting companies. And Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is now complemented by Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous, now in its second year, which will bring together an ecosystem of almost 250 people on 25 and 26 September, all looking for solutions to promote the development of virtuous marinas.
