Amy Sherald is known for her portraits of African Americans going about their daily lives. Following an exhibition at Hauser & Wirth London, the gallery will be presenting a selection of her works in its Monegasque space this winter. The individuals she depicts – with a touch that combines the realism of photography with a subtle stylisation – gaze straight ahead, immersing us in the intimate space of the painting while prompting a collective questioning. The portrait tradition has long excluded Black men, women, families and artists, who have been erased from politicised public discourse, and Amy Sherald’s social portraits are part of a wider reflection on the history of art and Western representations. A must-see.
