Jean-Christophe Maillot and Olga Smirnova are collaborating with each other several times this year. After starring as Juliette in Séville in January, the prima ballerina returns alongside the dancers of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo to reprise the title role of La Belle. The company’s choreographer-director offers an interpretation of Perrault’s fairytale that is both aesthetic and fierce, engaging with our childhood fears and sexual awakening. He introduces us to the second part of Perrault’s tale, which is often overlooked: having married her prince and become queen, Beauty and her children are threatened by the Ogress Carabosse. The show precedes the launch of the early summer programme, L’Eté Danse, which presents performances and festivities until July.
