Opéra de Monte-Carlo

In La Damnation de Faust, whose protagonist sells his soul to the devil, is burned by passion and breathes his last breath, composer Hector Berlioz brings a rare intensity to Goethe’s text, a masterful echo of the romantic tumult of emotions. To celebrate Monaco’s National Holiday, the director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Jean-Louis Grinda, has decided to pay tribute to this great work, first staged in Monaco in 1893. At the time it was supported by Prince Albert I himself, who even recorded excerpts on his own phonograph!
